Fall at Home in Millwood: Our Backyard This Season

Fall is my favorite time of year in Millwood. The trees down every street turn orange and gold, the light gets low and warm in the afternoon, and the lawn gets what we hope is its last mow of the year. This year it feels a little more special, because we finally finished the summer project that would never end.
Our Fall Backyard Project
This season we built raised planter beds around the kids' playground. For now they are filled with fresh soil and waiting. Next spring, they will be planted with tall perennials, so the playground is framed by flowers instead of fence.
I wanted the play area to feel like part of the yard, not something separate from it. When the perennials fill in, the kids will be playing in a garden, and I will have something beautiful to look at while they do.
It is a small project. But these are the projects that turn a house into your home. Every season, we add a little more of ourselves to this yard.
Why We Love Fall in Millwood
Millwood is a small town tucked into the Spokane Valley, and fall is when it shines. The streets are lined with mature trees, the leaves come down in every color, and neighbors are out raking and talking over the fence.
Our evenings slow down. The kids run until it gets dark, and we stay outside a little longer than we should because we know winter is coming.
What This Says About Living Here
When families ask me what it is like to live in the Spokane area, I always mention the seasons. Real fall, real winter, and long summer evenings are part of everyday life here.
So is space. Even in town, many homes here have room for a playground and a garden. For buyers coming from bigger cities, that is often what surprises them most.
Real moves are driven by life stages, not interest rates. A growing family, kids who need a yard, a wish for a garden or a little land: those are the reasons people move. When I help a family find a home, I think about the life they want to build there, season after season.
