A Custom Remodel in Fairwood Park: Herringbone, Handmade Cabinetry, and a Hidden Room

Some remodels are about getting a house ready to sell. This one was about getting it right. 12106 N Fairwood Dr is a full custom renovation in Fairwood Park, and every finish in it was chosen by someone who cared how it would feel to live with day after day.

The Main Floor

The first thing you notice is the floor. Herringbone tile runs across the main level and moves through the original arches, which were kept and framed rather than squared off. That choice gives a 1974 home a sense of craft that newer builds rarely have.

The kitchen is built around handmade custom cabinetry and a quartz half-waterfall island, with a built-in wall oven and a black farm sink. It is a kitchen designed to be cooked in. The island is where everyone will end up, and the layout supports that.

The primary suite has heated floors in the ensuite and a walk-in closet large enough to convert back into a fifth bedroom if you need the space. The hall bath has Carrera marble floors and a matching vanity. In total there are four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and 2,426 square feet.

The Lower Level

Downstairs is where this house shows its personality. A wood insert with a soapstone hearth anchors the family room, and a full bar sits right alongside it, so hosting feels easy instead of staged.

Then there is the bookshelf. Pull it open and there is a hidden room behind it. Kids will claim it immediately, and adults usually do too. This level also has a laundry area and a workshop space, plus rough-ins for an additional bedroom and bathroom if you want to expand later.

Outside and the Neighborhood

French doors open to a full-length deck overlooking a large backyard. The corner lot sits at the entrance to a quiet cul-de-sac, and the back of the property opens to a treed common area. All new fencing went in this year, and the two-car garage handles the practical side.

Fairwood Park is one of north Spokane's established neighborhoods. It's in the Mead School District, with Mead High School under a mile away and the trails along the Little Spokane River close by. Whether you are moving across town or relocating from out of state, it is a neighborhood people tend to stay in.

What to Notice When You Walk Through

When I walk buyers through a remodel, I look past the finishes to how the work was done. Here is what I would point out in this one.

Start with the tile. Herringbone is unforgiving, so look at how it meets the arches and how it transitions between rooms. That is where you see whether the installer took their time.

Then open some drawers. Handmade cabinetry means the boxes, doors, and joinery were built for this kitchen, not ordered from a catalog. You can feel the difference in how everything closes.

Look at the systems too. The furnace and AC were replaced in 2024, and the fencing is new in 2026. Those are the items that usually get skipped in a quick turnaround, and they were not skipped here.

Finally, think about how you will use the space over time. Between the walk-in closet that converts to a fifth bedroom and the basement rough-ins, this house has room to grow with you.
